Best Practices: Smart Fill & Snap-to-Fit

Automatic Tagging Tools

Brain Builder has a number of tagging tools to speed up the repetitive process of annotating images. Smart Fill and Snap-to-Fit are two tools that can automatically create detailed polygons around target objects in seconds. For the best results using these tools, follow the practices detailed on this page.

See Tagging Data for more information about the full set of Brain Builder tagging tools.

Smart Fill

Smart Fill uses color to define the boundaries of an object and create one or more polygons.

Works Best On...

  • Objects that consist of a narrow range of color that is distinct from the rest of the image
  • Objects have a complex shape that is not easily tagged with a Pen or Brush tool
  • Images that have many similar objects throughout that you want to tag the same way

Tips & Tricks

  • Use the Region of Interest selector to define the area of the image where you want to apply Smart Fill. Exclude areas of the image that might have the same color as your target object if you don't want them tagged as well.

  • Use the Color selector to pick a color in the middle of the color range you want to target. Don't pick the brightest or darkest spot. Go for the middle.

  • Take advantage of the Threshold slider to see how Smart Fill will be applied. Adjust the threshold to find the optimal setting for each image before applying the polygons to the image.

  • Use the Addition and Subtraction tools to refine the results if the Smart Fill polygons are not perfect. This still saves a lot of time compared to creating all of the polygons by hand.

Snap-to-Fit

Snap-to-Fit uses AI to intelligently create a polygon around the target object.

Warning Snap-to-Fit is an AI-assisted tagging tool that may not be available to all users. If you would like access to this tool, please speak to your Neurala account manager.

Works Best On...

  • Objects that are visually distinct from their surroundings
  • Objects that are in focus
  • Objects that are consistently lit throughout the image

Tips & Tricks

  • Snap-to-Fit has multiple modes: Person, Animal, Vehicle, and Anything. If you are tagging a person, animal, or vehicle, you'll get the best results by using the specific mode for that object.

  • Use the Region of Interest selector to draw a tight rectangle around the object you want to tag.

  • Use the Addition and Subtraction tools to refine the results if the Smart Fill polygons are not perfect. This still saves a lot of time compared to creating all of the polygons by hand.
